The koenigsegg design is the most interesting. I’m not so sure about infiniti’s efficiency claims, and whatever the case the cost of that variable CR setup seems like it would offset the cost of the emissions hardware of a modern diesel anyway.

At any rate, we’ll see. A proof of concept prototype is one thing, building a thousand engines a day which will last for 200,000+ miles is another.

I'm really curious to see what the warranty will be for these and how they hold up to abusive owners.

If the camless engine doesn’t need a timing belt, I’d hope overall reliability will improve since it’s one less thing to be changed and put off forever.

Replacing springs and wheels on a stick with a computer controlled electropneumatic system doesn’t exactly sound more reliable to me.

I don't understand why people complain about timing belts do much, follow the maintenance interval and 99% of the time you'll have no issues with them

It’s not the intervals, per say, but rather the pain of having to get to it.

Like Audi’s notorious V8 timing chain with essentially requires engine removal, removing the whole front clip, or god-like hands to get it done.

If camless maintance is a matter or plugging in a new set of pneumatics or whatever like it is with injectors and spark plugs, then I’d be down for it.

My guess is that if this system fails it will mean pulling the head. Of course that will be somewhat less annoying without belts/chains/pushrods but I doubt the service will be cheaper.

True, but if you’re able to wrench on it yourself, it’s a lot easier to unbolt heads and up than to undo entire timing chains/belts.
